Sutton Bonington Squash Club 2nd Team Reports

SBS2 v NSRC Racketeers 3 Monday 9th March 2020

League leaders NSRC Racketeers 3 were tonight's oponents. We nearly got 2 games underway on time. However we still managed to finish early as  2 of our bankers at 3 & 4 went down 3-0.
Maybe Dan Ginty was still thinking about hospitalising Joe Pygall last night. It certainly was not his night. Neither for Andy Edwards who I would have put money on to beat his opponent.
Mike French not having played for 3 weeks since his calf pull, hit some winners but put too many in the tin. Then again who am I to talk.
It was left to Matt Hogg to continue his successful season, though he did not have it all his own way,  two games going to 17 and 16, and Lyndon Kennedy who finally powered his way to the back of the court to beat his opponent. Without looking back to see if one of these 2 has not been awarded the honour, as it is the last match of the season for the seconds, they can share the MOM award.
I think this means we will now finish 3rd in the league. Not bad as there have been occasions when we have fielded a weakened side.
Captain French is in the throes of organising another end of season bash. Details to follow.

On another note - we did hear a whisper in the Cap that Joe is going to be ok - best  wishes Joe.

SBS2 v Nottingham 2 Monday 24th Feb 2020

Tonight we entertained Nottingham 2. Having lost the away match earlier in the season - when we were missing key players - Matt Hogg, Andy Edwards and Dan Ginty we were hoping of doing better in the home tie. As we had to draft in Luis due to the Captain's calf injury, ( thanks Luis )  we thought that he might be a banker - had he played regularly he of course would not have been at No 5 - but his careeer comes first. As it happened he was not able to get there until after 8 by which time I had been on court against a player who Tom Magson gave a good game to in the away tie. Having won  the first and at 4 all in the second being put under pressure, I kicked off on the wrong leg and repeated Mike French's calf pull. Hoping we might win the other matches, despite knowing from previous experience that it was folly, I had hoped that we might only drop the one point if I lost and could  win that game which I somehow managed 15-13. My opponent did question my pick up for the game ball, but the marker agreed with me that it was good.  But the writing was now on the wall. I knew that it could not last and had to concede after losing the next game 13-15.
Whilst this was happening Andy Edwards, whose match I did not see, lost to the opposing captain who did not play the home fixture, so were 2-0 down at this stage. Matt Hogg continuing his fine form took his opponent out in 3 to bring the match score back to 2-1 before Luis then went 2-1 down. He came across another player that could hit the ball as hard as he did and run as well. He did rally to win the next 2. But not without some controversy. Luis likes to take the ball where ever it is. But he must learn not to try to hit the ball when the stroke is obvious. The opposition on the gallery made that clear - Luis indicating perhaps that he could not play the shot. Right or wrong I gave a let - I did think a shot in a previous rally was dodgy which was not the first I had thought from both players, and in my opinion it would have been a travesty if the stroke had gone against him. All down to Lyndon then - not for the first time this season - going down 16/18 in the first - he did beat the same player away 3-0 - could he do it again. He did then play exceptionally well though I did suggest after the crap drop that cost him the first game that he might be better cutting out the short stuff. As players usually do he ignored the advice and it was as well because thereafter he was usually right when he did. So Lyndon  gets my MOM for securing the 3-2 win. But well played to Notts who were a sporting lot and held no grudges.
We are just above them now in the table behind Rushcliffe 4 and runaway leaders Racketeer 3, who are now 32 points clear of Rushcliffe, all on 15 games. Unfortunately it now puts extra pressure  on selection as 2 bottom end players are now injured. It could be worse.

SBS 2 v Grantham 4 Monday 3rd February 2020

Tonight's match v Grantham 4  got off to a good start as their No1 was there before me just after 7 . Alas the the rest of his team did not arrive until 2030.  Having first gone to the David Ross centre. At 1930 their No 1 confirmed they we were on campus - unfortunately it was the wrong one. We then wasted another 1/2 an hour before we were able to get the No.1 ones on court. It did not go down well with eirher of them. And unfortunately we had forgortten that we only had 2 courts until 2100 and courts were subsequently booked. Matt Hogg was the last on court  and at almost 2200  at   2-0 up we were faced with the  embarrasing position of having to declare Matt the winner - in the event Centre staff sorted the waiting customers and he was able to complete the match 3-0 giviing us a 4-1 victory.  Back to the beginning then - Lyndon beat Dave Gash  at Grantham but lost at Home in the 5th in a tight game. He did not show any signs of his thigh strain last week but that might have been on his mind. As I marked that game I persuaded Andy Edwards at 4 to take on the same, but  demoted opponent from the first tie at  Grantham, who he also beat  this time 9,11,8. I had anticipated, and so had Andy that he might face the opponent that I had lost to at Grantham, and who is unbeaten this season. A mere 20 points or so behind Andy on squash levels. I was looking forward to that. But it was not to be. So this week's MOM  goes to Andy who has only lost once this season. I had the pleasure of playing their oldest member, aparrently also able to retire at 51 like me, and I knew it was not going to be an easy ride. Having taken the huff with our marker to go down 15/14 down in the second game, after being in front. I was in the minority as  regards the opposing player, a nice gentleman, Martin, and the marker. The last time I slung the racket to deck after losing the game (16-14 ) I got a public warming.  I was forced into an apologiy then. So sorry marker. But when you are turning on the ball, it is not  always possible to see where your opponent is in the split second, when you have to take the decision, not to play the shot. Had he have been on the tee and I have hit the ball and him, it would have been stroke away. Fortunately I won the next games 10 & 7. Which just leaves us with Dan Ginty - just back from India, and who had spent  3 days ill, whilst there so well played Dan who also won 3-0 , though 2 of them 17-15 and 18-16, so close. But you perhaps deserve a share of MOM. Overall then a good result in the abscence of the captain.  and again thanks to Louise for putting up with delay well gone 2220 for the food  - which I think went down well with the Opposition.

Trent Bridge 5 v SBS 2  1900 Thursday 30 Jan 2020

SBS2 travelled to Trent Bridge tonight to play their 5th team. Having slipped a few places recently due to unforseen absences of a couple higher ranked players, tonight only missing Dan Ginty, who would have been at 3, the captain was hopeful of a good result to gain some ground. TB5 have not yet won a match all season, but they are a good bunch, and no pushover, and despite their subsequent 5-0 defeat were good hosts, at the TBI ( Trent Bridge Inn ) only yards from the squash club in the cricket club grounds. The captain and I were on together so I was only able to witness the final throes of his game. coming back from 2-1 down but 14-8 down in the 5th - not looking good Mike. To his credit he did what he had to do - show some grit and stick in there - if only his opponent had thought to ask for a couple of lets in those last points he might have won. So full credit to the captain who won 3-2. And can have my MOM ( man of the Match ) award for tonight. The rest of us won 3-0 - if only Wendy had realised how knackered i was - she might have recorded her first victory. She played Matt Hogg at Home but fortunately for her, she had me tonight - again Hoggy, elevated to 2 after christmas gave his opponent few opportunities and forced the errors on his opponent wining 3-0. I did not see Andy's game but I think it went in a similar vein to Lyndon's who both ran out 3-0 winners. Despite Lyndon nursing a thigh strain. So the captain was well pleased. and despite initial reservations the beer at £2.15 a pint went down a treat. Hard luck TB 5 at least we enjoyed your company in a friendly sociable atmosphere. That place must make a mint. Andy even treat himself to a pudding.

SBS 2 v Rushcliffe 5 Monday 20 January 2020

Lyndon Kennedy duly promoted to No.1 for the second half of the Notts League Division 4 team, SBS2, was unable to play because of an earlier thigh strain. Having lost the first leg to Rushcliffe 5, 3-2, with Lyndon in the team, it looked as though the writing might be on the wall. Particularly as the elder statesman of the team then had to turn out following a weekend in London, where though he managed to clinch his 3rd Regional Master title of the season. He was no match for the youngster that he played, unfortunately, and he lost the first match 3-0. Things looked a little brighter when the captain, Mike French, went 2-1 up against his opponent, a newcomer apparently, but eventually lost in the 5. Mike has current issues with family illness which must be causing him some stress so he need not be too disappointed. Only last week I took a beating off him.
Andy Edwards lost the first game against another fit young opponent, but Andy proved fitter in the end taking the 4th 16-14.
On the other court, A Dan Ginty pick up caused some controversy, I briefly saw it,- no comment - but it was not his fault, that Lyndon who was marking, went against his opponent. Dan ran out the winner taking the 4th 15/13. Well done Dan.
Matt Hogg was up against the player who beat Lyndon the first Leg, A very fit young man - much younger than I was when I first encountered the game - and when Hoggy went down 5/15 8/15 in the first 2 games - it did not look promising. But the lad has shown tremendous improvement since getting involved in team squash and his professionalism as an athlete showed through in the end, taking the next 3 games 7,12 & 10. A fine match from which both players can take take credit. Hoggy man of the match on this occasion bringing the team home 15-10. A magnificent effort . The Rushcliffe lads though were a fine bunch and demonstrated a sporting attitude at the end of the match and did not hold any grudges.
The grub at the Cap proved to be the liking of the 3 opposition players who came back for the afters - one even declaring it was the best meal they had had all season. One who shall remain nameless, even begged some tin foil to take the delicious cooked ham home for a sandwich for his wife. He was one of ours, but will remain nameless. Thanks Louise.

SBS2 v Southwell 3 Monday 11th November

Dave Hardern and Jim Burton stepping into the breach did not fair too well first on court. Dave being out gunned by a strong tennis player,
though Dave has moved around the court better. Jim took the second game but went down 3-1. Hoggy continued his fine form winning 3-0 as did Andy Edwards in an athletic match where it was a test of who could run the fastest and hit the ball hardest. Andy dropped 2 games but set the tie at 2 all, taking the 5th 15/8. Lyndon was left to show his prowess against the No 1 seed. Losing the first game, it did look a bit ominous, but he showed true grit to take the next 3.An excellent result takes us to the top of league 4, clear by 2 points, for the time
being anyway
